Sarah's first marriage to John Hadden, a baker, was a fruitful one, with eight children. In 1841 Sarah's young brothers Thomas and Henry Wren were part of the Hadden household on Woolwich High Street. On John's death in 1856 Sarah moved in with James Coe, the recently widowed husband of her sister Maria, but was unable to marry him owing to the prevailing Deceased Wife's Sister Act.
From 1861 onwards Sarah gave her name as Mrs Coe to the census enumerator. After James's death, she lived with her daughter Sarah Lucy Hadden and Emily Coe, the product of James's daughter Margaret Coe's liaison with an unknown man.
