Ellen was born at 4 Fox Place Plumstead to John Vaughan, bricklayer, and his wife Jane.
In the 1861 census the 12 year old Ellen was missing from the Vaughan household at Sandy Hill Road, Bright Place; instead she was living with her grandparents Enos and Lucy Vaughan in Pembroke, South Wales, where Enos was working as HM Inspector of Shipwrights.
Ellen married John Coe shortly after the birth of their first child Ellen Maud at East Wickham (the church where her parents also married); present were the fathers, James Coe and John Vaughan, and John Thomas Beale and Sarah Jane Pyne.
After the death of her husband John Coe in 1909 she lived in turn with her offspring; in 1911 she was sharing lodgings with her youngest daughter Nora. She died aged 87 and was buried at Plumstead Cemetery.
