Lucy was one of the Staplehurst Gomerys, the daughter of Thomas Gomery and Ruth Ranger, who at the time of Lucy's birth were living at Langley, a village near Maidstone. The 1841 census found them settled in Strood, Rochester, the birthplace of Lucy's eldest son John Vaughan around 1820 (some census birth details for John gave Strood rather than Frindsbury, but no baptism has been found for him in either parish). It is still unknown exactly how Lucy was related to the young Sarah Louisa Gomery who came to live with the Vaughans after her mother's death in 1844; was she an aunt or a great-aunt? At any rate Lucy and Enos provided a home for life for Sarah Louisa, and in return she devoted her life to looking after them in their old age.
