An obituary to William Bird (SEAX Item D/Du293/374 of 1771)has the following:- "Maldon March 6 1771. On Sunday last (3rd inst) after a short illness, in the 29th year of his age, died Mr William Bird, nephew to Mr John Coe, an opulent merchant of this town. It is not easy to describe the concern of the whole neighbourhood for the loss of this amiable youth, whose engaging behaviour and generous deportment had gained him the favour and regard of all ranks and degrees of people. Amongst many virtues and shining qualities, his distinguishing characteristic was the kind of charity which, in the emphatic words of holy writ, thinketh no eveil, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. He had the prospect, not the possession, of a very ample fortune; what was in his power was ever readily devoted to the proper object which presented, whence it is highly to be presumed, that had he lived to enjoy the fortunes in reversion for him, his future life had been one continued series of benevolent actions; in a word, his parents are deprived of a most dutiful son, his relations of an affectionate kinsman, his domestics of an excellent master, his acquaintances in general of a sincere friend, and the public at large of an invaluable member of society. "
He was buried in the d'Arcy Chapel in All Saints Church with his Aunt Hannah Coe and his Uncle William Coe.
