Notes

Margaret's birth certificate, registered on 7 March 1845, confirms her given names as Margaret Mary, but the baptism register of St Mary Magdalene Woolwich on 9 Mar 1845 transcribes her first name as Martha. By the age of 18 Margaret was the unmarried mother of Emily, born on 9 January 1864; her birth certificate omits the name of her father. Little Emily was brought up by her grandfather James and his Spouse Sarah Hadden, while her mother continued to make her living as a domestic servant.
In 1881 Margaret Coe was working as a cook in Frederick Nettlefold's household in Croydon, but ten years later she was further up the social scale cooking for a retired East India company merchant in Lancaster Gate, London. By 1901 Margaret Coe, still unmarried, was working as Assistant in her sister Eliza's Boarding House at 66 Talbot Road Paddington; obviously domestic service had been sufficiently lucrative for them both to have saved up enough of a nest-egg to invest in this joint venture.
