Groom Lane was a currier, or leather tanner, on the Market Place at North Walsham. In 1841 he wrote a letter to the Governors of Christ's Hospital, London (printed in the Times newspaper on 27 March) pleading financial hardship as the father of twenty-one children and requesting a place at Christ's Hospital School for one of his sons. Earlier that month his seven year old daughter Emma had obtained a place at the equivalent girls' school in Hertford (from presentation papers held at the Guildhall Library).
