William was the fourth and youngest son of Charles Coe b1662, and was still a minor when his father wrote his will in 1731. His brothers Charles and John were appointed guardians. His name appears on the family gravestone in All Saints Church Maldon - source photograph 1999.
MAHG in their email of 18 May 2003 have the words "a sugar baker of the City of London" as part of William's grave inscription, and with his cousin John Coape "of the parish of Saint Martin Vintry London, Sugar Refiner" (from Dr Thomas Coe's will proved 23 Dec 1761)owned a sugar refining business in the names of Coape J and Coe W in Bread Street Hill London. In 1741 their "Sugarhouse" was insured for the sum of £3, 200 by Sun Fire Office (Source: Sugar refiners and Sugarbakers website at www.mawer.clara.net/sunval1.html.
William in his will dated 1755 describes himself as being "of Thames Street London Sugar Refiner". Being without issue, he leaves his estate to his "brother-in-law and Spouse Mr John Coape", to his two brothers Charles and John Coe, his brother Dr Thomas Coe, his sisters Ann Bird and Martha Coe etc.
