James was born on 11 May 1805 in Leire and christened on 2 June at the Wesleyan chapel in Hinckley. By June 1826 James had moved to Hinckley to pursue his trade of hairdresser, being listed as such in the Poll for the Election of Two MPs for the Borough of Leicester for that year.
Four years later at the age of 25 James married Elizabeth Atkins, who had been born in 1807 in the nearby village of Burbage. Nine months later their first child was born - William - who was christened on 7 September 1831 at St Mary's Hinckley. The subsequent children, John, Ann, James and Robert, were also given Anglican christenings, but perhaps James had a crisis of conscience in 1837, for in that year he and Elizabeth had all their five offspring baptised together at the Wesleyan chapel on 21 June.
