Notes

Guy and his younger sister Gwen were the children of Sydney Glasscock and Lilian Newstead. Guy grew up in Romford and went to Grays School, where his asthma made the playing of sport difficult, but where he did well academically. In the 1920's the family moved first to Leigh and then to Thundersley Lodge, formerly one of Henry VIII's hunting lodges, which Lilian enjoyed furnishing with antiques. By this time Guy was employed by the Gas Board in London until the onset of war in 1939, when he joined the RAF and was sent to Burma. On one of his leaves he met Evelyn Collins, who had been invited by Sydney Glasscock, manager of the bank where she was working in Southend, to pick fruit in the Lodge gardens. A year after the end of the war Guy and Evelyn were married and living in The Chase, Rayleigh, opposite the elder Glasscocks, who were now the owners of Rayleigh Lodge, another Tudor hunting lodge.
Guy continued to work for the Gas Board in Southend, but more important to him were his hobbies: motor bikes, walking, gardening, rug-making, fairisle knitting, handloom weaving, photography, classical music and jazz, short story writing, electronics, foreign travel (especially the Greek Islands), wine-making and cookery (especially Scotch pancakes and vegetable soups).
