Individual Note

The identity of Sarah Louisa's father was not recorded on the baptism register, and the only evidence for her mother Sarah's being the daughter of Thomas and Ruth Gomery's daughter Sarah is the fact that she is described as the neice of Enos and Lucy Vaughan, or strictly speaking Lucy Gomery's great neice - her elder sister's grandaughter. Enos and Lucy took little Sarah Louisa into their home on the death of her mother in 1844, where she stayed throughout her childhood and adult life, repaying her uncle and aunt's generosity by caring for them herself in their old age, and only then moving out of Plumstead to live with the Hodges family in Islington. Emma Hodges was the sister of Jane Lane who had married John Vaughan the builder, and she and her sisters welcomed Sarah Louisa into their midst, hospitality that was rewarded by the terms of the latter's will on her death in 1918.
