Francis must have once had a skilled trade as he was able to sign his name on his marriage certificate and was also earning enough (i.e. worth over 40s a year or owning property commanding a yearly rent of £10) to qualify for the status of Freeman of St. Peter's Thetford (1837 Register of Electors for the Poll for 2 knights of the shire of the Western Division of Norfolk. In the Register of Electors for 1840 Francis was listed as eligible to vote by virtue of freehold cottages that he owned in Thetford, occupied by Cooper and others. |
