Individual Note
John's birth and baptismal dates and details are strangely vague; the baptism register for St Mary Magdalene Woolwich has John's birthdate as 5 Dec 1819 and his Baptism as 15 Nov 1833 nearly 14 years later, but oddly enough the Baptismal records of St Nicholas Plumstead have an entry for a John Vaughan son of Enos and Lucy born on 17 May 1820 and Baptised on 23 December 1827. Both birthdates pre-date the marriage of Enos Vaughan and Lucy Gomery, which points to John's being Lucy's illegitimate son. In view of Enos Vaughan's apparent inability to father children (his second "son" Edward was described as a nephew in the 1851 census) it is possible that John was one and the same as John Gummery (a spurious i.e. illegitimate birth) son of Lucy Gummery and William Pattison, a Royal Artillery Gunner stationed at Woolwich Artillery Barracks. This infant John was baptised at St Mary Magdalene Woolwich on 4 Jun 1820, with a birthdate of 27 May 1820.
This Woolwich birthplace, however, is difficult to square with that given by John Vaughan on his census form every ten years, i.e. Frindsbury (near Rochester) - an area close to Lucy's roots in Kent and also one where Enos Vaughan might well have worked as a ship's carpenter.
John did well for himself, working his way up the ladder from bricklayer to builder, expanding his workforce as he went, and ending up as an architect in Wakefield in the West Riding of Yorkshire, taking most of their family with them. Had there been a rift between the Vaughans and their daughter Ellen?
