Like his brother John, Edward Vaughan is something of a mystery. IGI have a birthdate of "about 1828" but census information points to something nearer 1822/23; his age at death in the first quarter of 1881 was 58. Nor has a baptism yet been found for Edward.
In the 1841 census Edward (18), a painter's apprentice, was living with Enos (40), Lucy (45) and John (20) at Charles Street, Woolwich, but in 1851 Edward, now a fully fledged painter living with Enos and Lucy, was described as a nephew born in Lambeth. By 1861 Edward, a Glazier/ Painter aged 39, was boarding with a Clark family at 4 Britannia Place, Plumstead, with his birthplace now shown as Woolwich. The following year he married Emma Shaw, and in 1871 the couple were living at 5 St James Place Plumstead with children Edward (8), Lucy (4), and William (3). By 1881 Edward had died, and his widow Emma was recorded in the census later that year as still living at 5 St James Place, with children Edward (painter), Lucy (wool worker - fancy goods), William, Arthur, George and John.
Edward's marriage certificate in 1862 gives his father's name as Enos Vaughan shipwright, but Enos's will in 1886 omits any mention of Edward's widow Emma or her children.
