In 1881 Emma and her husband Edwin Hodges were living at 8 Florence Street, Islington, with six of their nine children - Florence, Julia, Arthur, Frederic, Ella and Frank. Rosa, 22, and Leslie, 11, were visiting their Lane cousins in Holbeach, Lincs.
In 1891 the Hodges were at the same address, with five of their offspring - Rosa, Edgar, Leslie, Ella and Frank - and a visitor, a Louisa Gomery, aged 54.
In 1901, still at 8 Florence Street, Edwin and Emma, now aged 69 and 67, had three unmarried children living with them - Rosa, Leslie and Frank. Still visiting was Sarah Gomery, 63, born Greenwich, Kent, of independent means. She was to live there until her death on 11 December 1918; in her will she left £100 each to her "four friends, Rosa Hodges, Ella Hodges, Florence Perrin widow and Lilian Clay wife of John Clay of Nuneaton".
