In the 1881 census Leslie (11) was living with the family of Thomas Angell Lane, draper and grocer,49, of North Walsham (Emma's brother), and his wife Mary Ann in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. One of their seven children was Ralph Lane, aged 7, who went on to become famous as Sir Norman Angell, the writer and Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1933.
