Individual Note

A baptism exists for a John Glasscock at Rochford Church on 27 November 1748, the son of Thomas and Mary Glasscock, but so far there is no conclusive evidence that it is our John. Thomas Glasscock, a carpenter from Downham, is mentioned in the Rochford Settlement Examinations as being assessed for settlement in Rochford on 9 May 1774 on his return from selling his brother's property in Wickford; he and his wife Mary are described as having two children - James, 12, and Susannah, 7. Presumably John had already left home to seek employment; he may be the John Glasscock apprenticed between 1760-1767 to George Francis, butcher of Rochford and Freeman of Maldon and later butcher of Prittlewell (from the Poll for Members of Parliament for the Borough of Maldon 1826).

Note on Marriage to Sarah HICKMAN

John Glasscock was described as a widower. His previous marriage may have been to Hannah Hart on 20 Nov 1774 in Rochford. John was described as of the parish of Sutton.
