In the absence of any Essex census information on John Glasscock (unless he died pre 1841), I have ventured to connect him with the John Glasscock (aka Glass), boatbuilder of Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, who in 1851 gave his birthplace as Brightlingsea Essex, and his age as 68, making his birthyear a couple of years later than the Rochford baptism of 1781, not a significant discrepancy for those times. I have checked Brightlingsea Baptisms for the years 1780-85 but found no Glasscock entries; perhaps John spent his childhood there and forgot his Rochford origins?
There are various IGI baptisms for the offspring of a John and Phoebe Glasscock in Queenborough between 1807 and 1822, one of whom, James Glasscock (aka Glass), was born in 1811 and by 1861 was a shoemaker living on Grand Row, Queenborough, with a 22 year old son called James Hickman, a name very reminiscent of the Essex branch of the family living just across the Thames estuary in Southend. In fact, his namesake, James Hickman Glasscock (BAPMtised in 1778 at Rochford) had spent the years 1801-03 working as a journeyman tailor at Queenborough; is it possible that he was lodging there with his younger brother John? More research needs to be done before the Sheppey Glass/Glasscocks can be conclusively identified with the Rochford/Southend family.
