Individual Note
One of Harry's granddaughters remembers spending Christmas holidays at Empress Avenue as a child between six and eight years old, in the early 1920s. Times were hard, and after losing his tailor's business Harry was reduced to working on the living-room table, pressing the suits with a huge steam iron. Apparently he was living in hope of recovering some of the money owing to him. Also living in the house were his son Harry and daughter Ivy, both at that time unmarried. From the front upstairs room Ivy was running a dressmaker's business employing several girls.
