Individual Note

Arthur and Evelyn, although three years apart, were very close and could be mistaken for twins. On the family's move to Leigh-on-Sea, Arthur was taught to sail a dinghy by his father and never looked back; he loved to sail with family and friends on the Thames estuary whenever time and tide permitted. It was a hobby that took him into the Navy at the onset of the second world war in 1939, where he joined up as a submariner with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve; tragically in early January 1942 Lieutenant Arthur Collins met his death when 'Triumph' was mined off the Greek island of Milos.
