Individual Note
In 1901 Ted, as he was known, was living with his parents, John and Eliza Collins, and his schoolteacher sister Emily at 33 Tuscan Road, Plumstead, and working as a 2nd division clerk at the Admiralty. He was a keen sportsman, climbing many of the Swiss mountains before his marriage to Nora Coe in 1912, after which he promised to confine himself to less dangerous pursuits, such as tennis, cycling and photography. Like his parents and siblings, Ted was a non-conformist by religion and, with his brother-in-law Charles Shipman, ran the all-age Sunday School in Bloomfield Road Plumstead on Sunday afternoons.
By the time of his retirement Ted Collins had reached a senior post in the Admiralty and was on easy terms with many of the admirals. He was also a fine singer, and was enthusiastically involved with a Gilbert and Sullivan society in Woolwich. After the move to Leigh on Sea he liked nothing better than to sail on the Thames estuary with his son Arthur or daughter Evelyn. He had a keen interest in genealogy too, compiling a detailed tree of the Collins family and undertaking research for the Coe family in Maldon Church and in the Essex Record Office.
