Information is sparse. He is shown on our old handwritten family tree as a son of John Coe but the latter had no issue at the time of writing his will in 1778. Great Wakering parish marriage records describe both Jonathan and Mary Shaw, his bride, as being of the parish of Great Wakering.
In the burial register Jonathan is described as a "looker" ie "one who looks after or has charge of anything...; a guardian, keeper, shepherd, farm bailiff, steward" (Oxford Dictionary)
A note in Foulness parish church burial records records that Jonathan "was drowned with Sus'n Towe by a boat's overturning in a Creek near Wakering."
Both bride and groom were said to be "of this parish"; witnessed by a James Clark and a John Butler.
