After her husband Jonathan's death by drowning, Mary may have returned to Great Wakering with her young family where her relatives would have offered support. Her daughter Mary gave her birthplace as Great Wakering rather than Foulness in the 1851 census. By then there were no Shaws left in Great Wakering, but a retired mariner named Thomas Shaw, born in Great Wakering in 1790, was living in Leigh with his wife and daughter.
